CHANDIGARH: The generally bustling campus of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab University, was unusually quiet, even after the exam ended at 5pm on Thursday.
Electronic students of the eighth semester batch at UIET were appearing in the operation research exam from 2pm to 5pm, which Amandeep Singh, a student of BE (electronics) missed.

Amandeep had only gone back to his room in hostel number 2 to collect his roll number, but he never returned. By the time the exam ended, news of a charred body being found in his room had spread. Worried batchmates rushed back to the boys hostel to check and their worst fears were confirmed.
What followed left everyone shocked. His teachers are sure that nothing could have disturbed Amandeep to such an extreme. "We are still uncertain about the circumstances but the police and forensic team are trying to ascertain the facts," said Harish Kumar, warden of hostel no 2 and faculty member at UIET.
"We cannot imagine that the boy could have taken such an extreme step because of any academic reason or career related issue," said a faculty member from the electronics department.
A student of hostel number 2 said Amandeep had his plans pretty much figured out. He did not need a placement officer because he planned to go to Canada, where his family was settled. "He had a reasonably decent academic record. Just a re-appear, which he managed to clear and was not a big deal," he said.
Udayan, an Mphil student and an acquaintance of the deceased, said, "There was a lot of confusion over whose dead body was found in the room, since it was not in a state to be recognized."
